How much weight do you have to lose to go down a size?

January 29, 2010 · Posted in Plus Size FAQs

I'm a lіttlе annoyed bесаυѕе whеn I looked up similar qυеѕtіοnѕ, іt seemed lіkе lіkе everyone always saying іt's еіthеr 5 οr 10. Thе highest number I saw wаѕ 20 pounds fοr plus-sized girls. Well, I аm plus sized, аnd I hаνе lost a lіttlе over 50 pounds bυt аm still thе same size! It's ѕο annoying аnd I'm starting tο gеt frustrated bесаυѕе apart frοm avoiding health issues, I want tο bе аblе tο wear nicer clothes аnd nοt јυѕt "sacks".

Now thеn, I wаѕ 320lbs now I'm 268 аnd I аm 5'6" tall. I wear size 28 womens. I аm dieting аnd exercising tο lose weight. I саn рυt οn a size 26 bυt іt's uncomfortablely tight аnd I wouldn't wear іt bесаυѕе οf thіѕ. Sο whаt, аm I going tο hаνе tο lose 100lbs tο gο down one size? 0_O

Anyone еlѕе еνеr hаd thіѕ issue οr know іf thеrе іѕ anything I саn dο? Thanks!

It’s not about weight, it’s about inches

You’ve got to beat in mind that fat turns to muscle, after so much dieting it becomes less effective, loads of different factors.

i don’t understand how you could lose so much weight, and still be the same size, unless you have a lot of extra skin left. That would be my only explanation. It may also depend on how fast you lost the weight, if it was quite fast then the skin has not had sufficient time to shrink back down. Also, some people who lose a lot of weight decide to have plastic surgery to get rid of the extra skin. They end up taking off pounds and pounds of extra skin. So that may be the problem. But seems you should have at least gone down a couple of sizes. i am very baffled by this. sorry wish I had a better answer for you.

I know my friends mom works at a health clinic not exactly sure what she does tho but I have asked the same question and she told me everyone is different but the range is 10-20lbs.

I hope this information was helpful for you.

Hun, don’t be worried about the size on your tag. Just focus on being healthy. You lost 50 pounds! That is an amazing accomplishment! Don’t let the size of your clothes discourage you. You are doing something great for yourself and your body.

It really varies from person to person, depending on their natural body shape etc etc.
I understand your frustration but keep up the good work… you have already done incredibly well by losing more than 50 pounds!
Well done hun! Keep at it and you will soon notice your clothes getting looser and be ready to move gradually down sizes.
    Good luck x

Congrats alone on the weight lose!! I wish I could do it, tell your secrets. Don’t worry though I think the size difference will come if you continue. Maybe you have lost it in other areas. I know my face and legs tend to lose it faster.

It can highly depend on your height, body/bone structure, and fat to muscle composition among other things, but in general, an average person would go down a size after dropping about 6-10 pounds. I believe Weight Watchers says something like 7-8 pounds to go down a size.

Well, I gained 25 pounds when I was put on prednisone for my asthma and went UP two sizes. So, I am thinking around 10 pounds to go up or down a size.
